Increasing fresh fruit consumption and processing possibilities are dependent on producers having access to a wide range of species and varieties. Little research had been conducted on diversifying fruit production. The introduction and assessment of such fruit species is now on-going at various levels depending on the priorities highlighted. Initially a small number of specimens from each variety introduced to the collection are observed. Their various potentials are evaluated. Clones which can be developed are then propagated and placed in performance plots. The work carried out on passion fruit, guava and star apples since 1990 is particularly promising in terms of both productivity and the quality of fruit produced.
