While responding to the problems of provincial agricultural services and the needs of producers in the Territory (e.g. diversification, increasing the growing season, quantitative and qualitative improvement of fruit crops), the research programmes carried out since 1990 at the Pocquereux Fruit Research Station in New Caledonia have brought about a better understanding of the behaviour of tropical and sub-tropical fruit trees under the climatic conditions of this island. Results obtained in the area of variety assessment have increased the length of production periods for citrus fruit, mangoes, avocados. Work conducted on plant protection, particularly for the development of post-harvest treatments for fruit flies -carried out in collaboration with Hort-Research- has made it possible to export mangoes, peppers and aubergine. Information on crop management sequences has been made available through advisory leaflets. The Station has budwood and hybrid-seed production plots for the main improved varieties tolerant to the soil and climatic constraints of this region.
