New Caledonian Melanesian societies put a strong emphasis upon the dual notions of territoriality and mobility. Death itself will be inscribed within this duality since it is metaphorically assimilated to an overwhelming war defeat in battle and to what could be labelled as an unfortunate departure carrying potent threats to territory.
